Moving to a new city can be rough on the body and mind. To alleviate some of the pressure that often comes with uprooting yourself and settling in a new town, we’ve built the following guide to moving to Raleigh.

Packing Supplies

Start your move by first finding all of your supplies. Chances are high you’ll have some of the essentials, such as packaging tape, scissors, and labels, laying around the house. Other items, like cardboard boxes and packing insulation, may require you to go outside the home. However, just because you don’t have a particular item doesn’t mean you have to purchase it. In fact, many times you can find things like boxes for free if you know where to look. Try your local grocery store, for instance, as markets typically receive daily deliveries of food items and throw their boxes away after one use.

Packing Order

While it’s easy to simply throw items in boxes without care, packing your belongings this way can cost you time in the long run. Instead of placing all belongings in random boxes, opt to store your things according to the room in which those things are typically used. For example, make sure you pack all of your kitchen supplies together, rather than mixing them with bathroom items to save space. You’ll also want to properly label each box. And if you want to go the extra mile, consider building an inventory of each item’s location with a notebook or a spreadsheet program.

Lifting

The last thing you want to do before transporting all of your belongings across the country is break a leg or pull your back, so it’s important to keep safety in mind while moving. Avoid injury by paying attention to your form while lifting boxes and furniture. Lift with your legs rather than your back. And never try to lift an object if you’re not 100 percent confident you can handle the weight.

Moving Services

Speaking of safety, moving by yourself is definitely not advised. If you don’t have any friends or family members in North West Raleigh, you should seriously consider hiring a moving service. Handy Hands Moving Helpers is one service in the area, and they can assist with everything from moving to truck rentals.

Storage

After you get settled in to your new apartment, you may notice that you’ve brought more things than you need. Maybe a couch just doesn’t look right with the apartment’s other decor, or maybe you’ve come to the realization that you won’t need all of those winter clothes in Raleigh’s rather hospitable climate. Whatever your reasoning, you can always store these temporarily unwanted items at a nearby storage facility. Jimmy’s Minis in Raleigh is one local option with considerably low rates when compared to some of the more well known brands.

Changing Address

One of the last things you’ll need to do upon moving to Raleigh is change your billing address. Contact your previous post office after you’ve settled in and ask them to begin forwarding all mail to your new home. You may also want to establish residency in the state by going to the Raleigh DMV and renewing your license, though you’ll also need to fill out several other forms before you’re officially considered a resident.

Once you’re finally finished with your moving chores, it’s time to go out and explore all of the things this wonderful city has to offer!
